The Business MOT: a practical check on how your business runs
A hands-on review of your enquiries, follow-up, admin, systems and processes, with a written action plan showing what to improve first.
Who it's for
Business owners and managers who feel things could run more smoothly but can't see exactly where the problems are. It suits owner-managed businesses, growing SMEs and established companies alike, especially where work keeps coming back to the owner or management team, jobs fall through gaps, or you suspect time and customers are being lost somewhere between the first enquiry and the final invoice.
This isn't a formal audit. It's a practical look at how your business works day to day.

Business MOT FAQs
What is a Business MOT?
The Business MOT is a practical review of how your business currently operates. It looks at areas such as:
- Enquiries
- Quote follow-up
- Customer communication
- Admin
- Workflows
- Systems
- CRM use
- Processes
- Duplication
- Bottlenecks
- Owner or management dependency
- Repetitive tasks
The aim is to identify where things could work better and give you a clear list of priorities.
Is the Business MOT an audit?
No. It is not a financial, accounting or compliance audit.
The Business MOT is an operational review focused on how the business works day to day and where practical improvements could be made.
What do I receive after the Business MOT?
You receive a practical summary of the main findings and recommended priorities. This should clearly identify:
- What is currently working
- Where problems or inefficiencies exist
- Where time may be being wasted
- Where customers or revenue may be slipping through gaps
- What should be improved first
You can see a sample action plan here.
Do I have to buy any further services afterwards?
No. There is no obligation to purchase anything else. You can take the recommendations and implement them yourself if you prefer.
If you would like help putting changes in place, The Fix or Business Care may be appropriate.
Who is the Business MOT for?
The Business MOT can work for owner-managed businesses, growing SMEs and established companies where:
- Owners or managers are carrying too much
- Admin feels disorganised
- Processes have developed informally
- Enquiries or quotes are not consistently followed up
- Customer communication could be improved
- Systems are not being used properly
- Things regularly fall through the gaps
- The business has grown but its processes have not kept up
- Teams are working hard but operational issues keep recurring
Is the Business MOT only for small businesses?
No. The Business MOT is suitable for businesses of different sizes where there is value in reviewing how processes, systems and day-to-day operations are working.
Larger businesses may use it to focus on a particular team, process or operational area rather than the whole organisation.
How much does the Business MOT cost?
The standard price is £195. A free 15-minute discovery call is available first if you would like to discuss whether the MOT is right for your business.
Can the Business MOT be completed remotely?
Yes. The Business Workshop operates remotely across the UK.
The review can be completed through calls, screen sharing, discussion of current processes and review of relevant information provided by the business.
How long does it take?
The exact amount of time depends on the size and complexity of the business or the area being reviewed.
The process is intended to be practical and proportionate rather than becoming a lengthy consultancy exercise.
What happens if you identify something that needs fixing?
You can implement the recommendation yourself, use another provider, or ask The Business Workshop to help. Business improvement projects are available through The Fix, with projects starting from £500.
Can the MOT focus on just one part of the business?
Yes. If the main issue sits within a specific area such as customer follow-up, CRM use, admin, quoting or workflow, the review can be focused around that area rather than looking at everything.
